First of all, tell us about yourself.

Hi I’m Hannah, I’m a RAF wife with two children under 4, I met my husband at school – I was the geeky one who had a crush on the cool kid (though don’t tell him that!). I’ve always loved being creative, I was never embarrassed about carting huge art projects on the bus to school and I was the one who always chose to do odd installations at art college rather than painting...anything fun and unique really grabbed me. I like to look at things from a different perspective.

Tell us about your business…

I’m a graphic designer, specialising in branding for small – medium sized businesses. I love having a business come to me with no idea how they want to look and go away feeling like they have a ‘proper’ business brand. The companies I’ve worked for say they feel so much more professional once they’ve been branded – I love making that feeling happen!

Growing through word-of-mouth has been my greatest success.

What would you say has been your business’ greatest achievement so far?

I think growing through word of mouth has been my greatest success, I only set up on social media last year but I’ve been running for 8 years and still I get most of my business through referrals from people who have worked with me…I’m super proud of that as it must mean I have happy customers.

I am also proud of some of the big corporate projects that I’ve worked on including the Bacardi website and their comms around being an inclusive workplace. Working with VIP Nursery in Elgin has been a project I’m proud of too, it’s my charity project and I love how far they’ve come with their branding.

Can you share any graphic design top tips with us?

  1. Really consider your target market.
Just because you like your design it doesn’t necessarily mean it works for your dream customers. Sometimes small changes to colours and fonts can make a huge improvement to your look and feel.

  2. Make your logo smaller.
I can’t tell you how many times I see things designed by people where their logo is HUGE!! If you have a strong enough brand people will recognise it without having the logo pushed at them – push the main message not the logo.

  3. Be consistent across every touch point.
From socials to web to print. Think about your brand’s message and consistently put this across through the visuals and tone of voice. I should be able to tell it’s you every time I see communication from you.

What does the future hold for your business?

This is an exciting question, I hope to be offering some downloadables soon on my website as well as looking to take on more people to help grow my business.

We love championing other small businesses. Could you share three of your favourites with us?

  1. The Business Widget – Emily is amazing. She has helped me really focus my efforts and taken the admin strain off my shoulders. I recommend her to any small businesses.

  2. Kate Emma Lee – Makes beautiful pottery pieces.

  3. Clos Line – Chloë Holwilll-Hunter is an amazing illustrator, and I think we’ll see great things from her in the next couple of years.

And finally, our quick-fire questions...

  • What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Luck comes from hard work.

  • What advice would you give?

Listen before you speak….and design advice for non-designers creating anything – make everything on the page 30% smaller (don’t be afraid of that white space…honestly, it will help!).

  • What do you wish you’d known before starting your business?

How much it would grow and how quickly, so that I could have said no to more jobs earlier on and really focused on the jobs I was passionate about.

  • Beach or mountains? Beach.

  • Early bird or night owl? Early bird.

  • Box-set or film? Box-set.

  • City life or rural living? Rural-living.

  • Cake or macaron? Macaron.

Thank you so much Hannah!
