Celebration Cakes

Can you make gluten-free celebration cakes?

Yes, we can make gluten-free occasion cakes. This said, as they are produced in a kitchen that regularly handles ingredients containing gluten, we are unable to guarantee that they are 100% free from gluten.

How many layers of sponge does each celebration cake have?

Our most popular size occasion cakes have four layers of soft sponge, and stand approximately 4”+ in height. If you would like a taller or smaller occasion cake, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

What are the most popular celebration cake flavours?

Our most popular celebration cake flavour is organic Madagascan vanilla, with smooth, whipped organic Madagascan vanilla buttercream and award-winning Willamette raspberry conserve or award-winning Camarosa strawberry conserve.

Other popular flavours include:

  • Rich Callebaut Belgian chocolate, with melt-in-the-mouth Callebaut Belgian chocolate buttercream and creamy hidden morsels of Callebaut Belgian chocolate;

  • Zesty Sicilian lemon with smooth, whipped Sicilian lemon buttercream, organic Sicilian lemon curd and a citrusy Sicilian lemon drizzle and

  • Indulgent salted caramel, with silky salted caramel buttercream and a hidden molten salted caramel drizzle, with notes of toffee and butterscotch.

Please let us know if you have another flavour in mind. We welcome requests, and especially love creating bespoke seasonal flavours.

What size cake should I order?

Our celebration cakes are 6”, 8” or 10” in size. The number refers to the diameter of the cake - 6” for example means that the cake is 6” in diameter.

We usually recommend dessert-size potions for our celebration cakes. Please see the illustration below for an example of the number of portions that each size cake gives.

What style of buttercream finish can I have?

We offer three styles of buttercream finish on our celebration cakes:

  • Full (a complete buttercream finish);

  • Semi-naked (a semi-frosted buttercream finish with some layers of sponge peeking through) and

  • Textured (a relaxed buttercream finish).

The example celebration cake below has a textured buttercream finish.

Cupcakes

Can you make free-from or vegan cupcakes?

Yes, we are able to make our cupcakes gluten-free, dairy-free and/or vegan on request.

You are welcome to combine two flavours in the same gift-box if they have the same cupcake base (for example Madagascan vanilla and Jammie Dodger, which both have a Madagascan vanilla base, or Kinder Bueno and Ferrero Rocher, which both have a Callebaut Belgian chocolate cupcake base).

General Questions

Can you cater for allergies?

We are able to offer gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free and vegan bakes, and take utmost care when creating your order. This said, our bakes are prepared in a kitchen where all of the fourteen major allergens, as recognised by the Food Standards Agency, may be present.

Please contact us with any questions or if you require further information.

Do you offer collection, delivery or postage?

We offer a collection and hand-delivery service across Hampshire, Surrey, South West London, West Sussex, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds, Wiltshire and Dorset.

Please contact us if your wedding or occasion is a little further away than this. We are usually happy to travel.

We are developing a range of gift-boxes for postage. Please let us know if you would like to be notified when this service is available.

How do I order?

  • Step 1: Please contact us to let us know that you would like to place your order.

  • Step 2: We will confirm our availability as soon as possible. If we are able to fulfil your order, we will e-mail you an Order Confirmation, and a copy of our Terms and Conditions.

How many macarons do you recommend per person?

We recommend 1 - 2 macarons per person, depending on the other catering arrangements for your wedding or occasion.

What size cake should I order?

Our recommended portion size for wedding cakes is a finger portion (1” x 1” x 4”), and for occasion cakes is a dessert portion (1” x 2” x 4”). If you would like larger slices that those recommended, we advise ordering an extra sponge. Our cakes are available in the following sizes:

  • 4” - Approximately 5 dessert portions / 10 finger portions;

  • 6” - Approximately 12 dessert portions / 20 finger portions;

  • 8” - Approximately 24 dessert portions / 40 finger portions;

  • 10” - Approximately 38 dessert portions / 60 finger portions.

Why do you use organic ingredients?

We choose to bake exclusively with high-quality ingredients for two equally important reasons: Firstly because we believe that every ingredient contributes to exceptional taste; and secondly because we value suppliers who promote sustainable production, farming in harmony with nature, and respecting and giving back to their communities.

Organic farming standards promote sustainable production, the highest welfare standards and vibrant farmland wildlife. Produce and grains must be grown without artificial chemicals or fertilisers, and animals are raised on an organic diet without the routine use of antibiotics.

In all our sourcing we seek to create a positive social and economic effect on the communities who supply our products and ingredients.

You are also very welcome to mix and match flavours to create your perfect tier! This is where the fun begins!

*Please note we offer a choice of several champagnes, sparkling wines and prosecco for this flavour, to best suit your budget. We always love to support local producers, including Hampshire’s award-winning Raimes and Hattingley Valley vineyards, and offer a budget-friendly organic prosecco option too.

Please contact us to discuss your thoughts. We’d love to hear from you!

Can we have different flavours for each tier?

Of course, you are very welcome to incorporate different flavours into your wedding cake. As our cakes are buttercream wedding cakes, it is worth keeping in mind that each tier will vary in colour if you choose this option.

Some couples choose to have each tier in the same flavour to give a symmetrical appearance to their wedding cake, and a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tier in another flavour, to be cut up and served with the rest of their cake.

Please see below for a list of our most popular flavours. Bespoke requests are always welcome, and we love creating seasonal flavours with beautiful local produce.

You are welcome to combine sponge and buttercream options too to create your favourite flavour!

Can we choose our own cake stand and topper?

You are very welcome to choose your own cake stand, and we recommend that you purchase your own cake topper if you would like to use one.

Your venue is likely to have a cake stand and a cake knife that you can use too.

If you decide to purchase your own cake stand, please speak to us first to make sure it is wide enough and sturdy enough to hold your cake. Wedding cakes can be heavy, and it is very important that your stand is as stable as possible. As an example, a three-tier wedding cake for around 120 guests can weigh upwards of 12kg.

We recommend Prop Options and Mosser Milk glass ceramic cake stands. You are welcome to hire your cake stand from us if you prefer.

Do you make dummy tiers?

We do not offer dummy tiers, as all of our wedding cakes are freshly baked to order, with soft, light sponges and smooth, whipped buttercream. They are not covered with fondant or sugar paste.

Do you offer cake tasting sessions in person?

At the moment, unfortunately we are unable to host wedding cake tasting sessions and sketches in person. We are conducting consultations via Zoom and telephone call, and can arrange an alternative cake tasting during our call.

Following our call, you will receive a detailed personalised quotation. We are here for you at all stages of your wedding planning journey, and it’s our pleasure to support you until your design is just right. There is no charge for our time or quotations, and no obligation to book at any stage.

How do we choose the size of our wedding cake?

Our wedding cakes are available in 4”, 6”, 8” and 10” tiers. The number refers to the diameter of the cake - 6” for example means that the cake is 6” in diameter.

Please see the illustration below for an example of how these tiers are stacked together to give you the best size wedding cake for your number of guests.

We usually recommend finger portion servings for our wedding cakes, as illustrated on the right of the diagram below. If you would like larger slices, for example if you are serving your cake as dessert, please refer to the portion guide on the left of the image.

This information is based on classic height wedding cake tiers, each with four layers of soft sponge. If you would like taller (6 layers of sponge) and / or smaller (2 layers of sponge), please contact us for a personalised recommendation.

How do we pay for our wedding cake?

When you are ready to place your booking with us, we ask you to accept our Terms and Conditions electronically, and to transfer your deposit.

We are happy to accept a 50% deposit, and a second payment of 50% six weeks before your wedding, or a 25% deposit, with three further payments of 25% spread between the date of your deposit and six weeks before your wedding day. You decide which works best for you.

If you need to cancel or postpone your wedding at any stage due to the pandemic, we work with you to re-arrange your payment schedule, or offer a full refund.

How tall will our wedding cake be?

The height of each wedding cake varies with each design, especially if you would like to combine tiers of different heights.

As an example, a three-tier classic height wedding cake (4 layers of soft sponge per tier), for around 120 guests is around 12 – 16” in height.

The cake stand you choose to use, and any floral decoration on top of your cake, or a cake topper, will add extra height to your cake too.

What happens if our wedding is affected by Covid-19?

We completely understand that things are a little bit up in the air at the moment to say the least, and are here to support you at all times. Being engaged and planning a wedding is such a special time, and we’ve got your back.

If you decide to postpone your wedding due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will move your booking to your new date at no extra charge. If we are unable to fulfil your booking on your new date, we will fully refund you and support you to find another cake maker where possible.

If you decide to cancel your wedding due to the pandemic, we will fully refund you. We want you to be happy and feel supported at all times of your Scrumptious Bakes client journey, and our core values of kindness, connection, integrity and passion underpin all that we do.

What style of buttercream finish can we have?

We offer three styles of buttercream finish for our wedding cakes:

  • Full (a complete buttercream finish);

  • Semi-naked (a semi-frosted buttercream finish with some layers of sponge peeking through) and

  • Textured (a relaxed buttercream finish).

Please see below for an example of each.

You are welcome to vary the style of finish on each tier. Our Gallery also has lots of example images.

We welcome example images of styles of cake that you like. Please see our Wedding Cakes Pinterest board for inspiration too.

When should we contact you?

You can contact us at any stage in your planning process!

If you have your date and venue confirmed, we will be able to let you know whether we have availability when you say hello. If you are at the stage where you’re considering the time of year and/or area that you’d like to get married in, that’s completely fine too, and we can firm up details as you finalise various elements of your day. We can pencil in your proposed date(s), and let you know if we receive any other enquiries whilst you are deciding.

Step 1

The first questions we’ll ask are whether you have your date and venue confirmed and how many guests approximately you’d like your cake to serve (it’s no problem if this changes later on - we confirm everything with just before your final payment, six weeks out from your date).

We’ll then ask about favourite flavours that you might like to incorporate (see above), and whether you’ve had any thoughts so far about how you’d like your cake to look (our Pinterest boards have lots of inspiration).

We can schedule a call or Zoom, or chat via email or WhatsApp - whichever you prefer.

Step 2

When we get closer to your date, we’ll start to think about your cake stand, whether you’d like a cake topper, and the location you’d like your cake to be set up in.

If you have a venue coordinator, they'll be able to to suggest some great locations, to make best use of the light for your photos. If you don’t have a venue coordinator or wedding planner, we can chat through options with you.

We will also liaise with your florist and venue as we get closer to your date, to make sure that everything is in place for your cake to look its beautiful best on your day!

Step 3

We’ll arrive on your wedding day, and set your cake up as planned, leaving behind some special boxes for you to save some to enjoy the next day if you’d like to. We liaise with your venue, or a designated person, and you don’t need to be there for our set up. All that’s left to do is cut your cake and enjoy your first mouth-watering bite!

Who decorates our cake?

We do!

We recommend that any fresh flowers and foliage for your cake are provided by your florist, who will ensure they are conditioned to look their best on your day, and that they match the rest of your flowers perfectly.

We will work with your florist in the lead-up to your wedding to outline your design and the flowers that we require, and will meet them at your venue on the morning of your wedding.

If you do not have a florist for your wedding, we are happy to recommend some fabulous local florists through which to source the flowers and/or foliage you require, and can organise this for you.

Will our cake or macaron tower look exactly like the design we’ve discussed?

We will always do our best to create your vision exactly as we’ve discussed. Please be aware that some variation is natural, and part of what makes each Scrumptious Bakes design so special; each creation is hand-made and utterly unique!
